update:
so it starts but still isn’t right. When it was running there was a fair amount of smoke come out the tail pipe. Either way, its heading to the shop. I’ve run out of time to do this on my own.
I had replaced a cam position sensor based on a ‘historic code’. I decided to try the old one and it actually started, HOWEVER, i put the new one back in and it started again. The car hasn’t run in maybe 3 weeks, so this was its first start up.
This is the order of what I did:
running rough: found a slice in the tube between the air box and intake maifold., replaced tube
P0300 random misfire, runs rougher: spark plugs, cleaned MAF
no change, replace one of two cam position sensors (while waiting for that, I took the opportunity to replace a leaking oil pan. while removing the oil pan, a coolant pipe was damaged. oil pan still leaks, drain oil, do a goop seal, replace oil. COOLANT PIPE ARRIVES 2.5 WEEKS LATER. attach pipe, add coolant, push start, and that brings us to current time with this evenings fun.
original:
Why won’t it start. It’s all back together. I just goes chuga chuga chuga chuga. It will start to turn over but for a split second

It’s either air, fuel, or spark.
On a serious note: all sensors hooked up?
Also, check your fuses, it’s always a good way to avoid chasing problems for hours/days/weeks/years.

Or any combination of the three.
You have kids, right Opposaurus? Is the airbox filled with fruit loops?

Nissan’d.
Seriously, fuck this van. It seems like you have nothing but problems with it and, in the event of a crash, the situation is not good.

Ground strap still good. Battery fully charged up?

remove the air intake hose and spray some starter fluid or carb cleaner. If it tries to start, then its something about the fuel system, open all the doors and try to listen for the fuel pump to prime.

I charged the bettery overnight just I'm case. It's also hooked up to another car for a jump

If you had the battery disconnected, do you need to reset the brains?

It’s “Froot Loops”. The spelling is intentional to make sure it’s clear that the product contains no actual fruit.

I t’s only “starting” to turn over...? If the crank is barely rotating, then what’s going “chuga chuga” ? Is the noise coming from the starter motor?

Statted with the hose between the air box and intake manifold. It was running rough and found that it had a slice in it. Replaced that and got a misfire. Cleaned MAS, same problem. Replaced sparkplugs which were due anyway, a cam shaft position sensor due to a historic fault code. In a separate project , replaced the oil pan and a coolant hose that got damaged in the process.refill oil and coolant.

Iv really just been chasing this same problem. I had to wait 2 weeks for an unrealated part to get it back together.

Will it turn with a breaker bar?

What codes are current/stored? Unless it is a fuel issue, every Nissan I have worked on has set at least 1 code when it wouldn’t start.

O don't think I was getting a code

Check the cam position sensor wiring again, that would give you a no start. Does the fuel rail have pressure? Look one more time for any loose connectors. Not hard to knock something or stretch a wire while working on another part.

Unplug the maf and try running it without the maf. This will put it into a default strategy. I would also plug in an obd 2 scanner and put the car on the on position, look at live data for anything funny, like a coolant temp sensor pegged in the wrong direction. Check your grounds and fuel and air. While cranking look at the obd scanner to see if it’s registering the crank revolutions too.

Post a YouTube video of what the cranking sounds like, might give more clues.

you fixed part of it. I started thinking if maybe the new cam posiiton sensor was any good. I put the old one back in, and it actually started. It wasn’ t perfect but it at least ran. I shut it off again and put the new one back in and it did start. I think it may have either been in loose or more likely the plug was loose. My brother-in-law left with the code reader so I cant get the code but I’m going to guess it was the same p0300

Did you let the smoke settle? You’ve been cranking it a fair amount so it may just have been flooded and needed to clear itself out. Any codes? Loopy idle?
![]() 05/11/2020 at 21:49 |

Is the smoke coming out of the tailpipe white, blue or black? Misfires could be due to bad head gasket and coolant leak or water in the fuel (white), worn oil rings (blue), bad fuel/wrong fuel (i.e. diesel in a gasoline car) could come out black.
If you haven’t yet pull and inspect the sparkplugs. Oily/fouled plugs on one or more cylinders will tell.

Skipped timing? Sometimes that’ll trigger a cam angle sensor fault because it doesn’t match the crank / other cam

it was fairly dark out. I’ll check in the morn ing. I want to say it was fairly white but could have had a slight blue tint. The oil has been drain and refilled twice since it was last d riven due ot the f’in oil pan gasket(s)

at first the idle wasn’ t that bad but after i took a spin around the block (1/3 mile) the idle dropped waayyy down when I slowed into the driveway. I dont have the code reader tonight but the CEL was on and it had been cleared before I started it. I’m thinking the smoke was due to it needing to get cleared out.

That’s progress. Nothing more frustrating than thinking you’ve fixed something only to have a result worse than prior to the fix.
